African mango tree is known by the scientific name Irvingia gabonensis. It is an indigenous tree of West and Central Africa. It is a wild forest tree that bears fruit with one seed. The seed contain high quantity of fiber and healthy fats. The fat contained in the seed ranges from medium to long chain fatty acids equivalent to the one obtained in coconut oil.

Irvingia gabonensis has no history of use in the traditional medicine, but is commonly eaten as edible fruit in African local communities. African mango in the recent times has become popular as weight loss supplement after it was featured in Dr. Mehmet on The Doctor Oz Show. It is commonly sold as a detoxification agent is usually blended other high-fiber sources like flax seed and bran fiber.

Is African Mango Effective for Weight Loss?

African Mango with Green TeaThe presently accessible research on the physiological effects of African mango supplements is only trial studies and not enough to discover its therapeutic value.

A few numbers of human studies carried out showed that African mango supplements have a link with weight loss, reduced cholesterol and low levels of blood sugar.  African mango contains large quantity of fiber and healthy fatty acids which can boost weight loss when it is backed with a comprehensive diet and exercise plan.

Two human clinical research show that African mango may boost weight loss in individual who are overweight. However, these studies are rated with poor quality due to the substandard research methodology used.

One of the trail studies made use of a specific formula of I. gabonensis referred to as IGOB131 on the treatment participants for a period of ten weeks. The overweight individuals that were used in the research were divided into treatment and panacea groups. The treatment group was given 150 milligram doses of IGOB131 two times every day.

The participants were not placed under any dietary restrictions. The result obtained from the study showed that intake of the African mango supplement helped to regulate the quantity of food the individuals eat. The group receiving I. gabonensis consumed roughly 2,767 kCal daily while the panacea group ate roughly 3,156 kCal every day. Members of the treatment group lost roughly 28.22 lbs or 12.8 kg while members of the placebo group lost roughly 1.8 lbs or 0.7 kg of weight.

A second 28 days study where the treatment participants were given a 1.05 g dose of I. gabonensis three times daily and limited to a daily diet plan of 1,800 kCal for both the treatment and control group found that the treated group lost roughly 8.8 lbs or 4 kg while the control group members witnessed no noticeable loss of weight.

Despite the fact that the results obtained from these studies are promising,  a research review published in 2013 on these studies reveal that the evidence are not conclusive enough to establish if the Africa mango supplement is effective for weight loss or not. The author who reviewed these studies, stated that a more broad-spectrum research are required to be able to specify exactly and conclusively the therapeutic effects of African mango seed extracts.

How African Mango Helps to Maintain Good Heart Health

The studies discussed above also found that Irvingia gabonensis helped to boost the levels of lipid in the blood by minimizing the quantity of unhealthy fatty acids present in the blood.

In a 28-day clinical trial, participants who received 1.05 g doses of African mango experienced reduced levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol or LDL-C by forty-six percent.

It was also found that it reduces the total cholesterol levels by roughly thirty-nine percent. It was also found to reduce the levels of serum triglyceride by forty five percent and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels or HDL-C, or “good” cholesterol was increased by forty-seven percent.

A ten week study show that the treatment group experienced a twenty seven percent less of LDL-C and a twenty six percent less levels of total cholesterol. When compared to the placebo group that experienced a two percent reduction in total cholesterol and a five percent reduction in the levels of LDL-C.

In a 1990 study with Irvingia gabonensis was observed to lower blood glucose levels. Over the course of 30 days, participants with type II diabetes consumed a single daily dose of 4 g I. gabonensis seed fiber dissolved in 100 mL of water.

At the end of the study, LDL-C, triglycerides, total cholesterol and fasting blood glucose levels were all considerably reduced when compared to baseline levels. It was also observed that it led to a boost in HDL-C.
